Labor Studies Certificate

2023 Labor Studies Certificate

The Center for Labor Education & Research (CLEAR) is pleased to announce the July 31 deadline for scholarships for the Labor Studies Certificate Program at the University of Hawai'i–West O'ahu. Classes will begin on August 21st.

  • The Hawaii AFL-CIO Scholarship provides up to $5000 in funds for affiliate staff and affiliate members to obtain a certificate in Labor Studies from the University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu.

  • The Hawaii State AFL-CIO's Labor Community Services Program Scholarship also provides up to $5000 in funds and supports students and those with an interest in labor education and the labor community.

  • UNITE HERE, Local 5 Labor Studies Scholarship supports its members and their families as well as students with an interest in improving the lives of working people.

The online 15-credit Labor Studies certificate program empowers students with the knowledge to improve their working lives and equips them with the skills necessary for careers as labor resource specialists. Courses address union structures and politics, workers’ rights, labor laws, collective bargaining, and labor theory.

Non-traditional adult learners may have their high school GPA and course requirements met by one providing documentation of experience. Unionists and traditional students engage in the content concurrently and submit written and podcast responses. All courses meet the university criteria for oral/speech communication development.

Student course evaluation comments from last semester are below:
